Would anyone be willing to explain what the avatar photo list is about, and what each category means?

I think the line:

Set avatar / photo to external URL

means I am to place a URL for a photo I want to appear next to my name?

How would I do this from a photo on my hard drive?

And do I have to resize it first?

I really don't understand the listing under photos.

Hoping someone will help me out.
